Presentation proposals are due by Friday 18 December 2020.

Viva La Bike Boom! Themes

Topics for presentation proposals should fall into one of the four themes of the Viva La Bike Boom! e-Global Congress:

  • Changing Gears - politics, advocacy and municipal policy, gender, race, climate and social justice
  • Keeping the Wheels Turning - urban planning and design, equipment, how-to’s, maintenance and operation
  • Pedalling for the Future - social, financial, physical and mental health, psychology, community building business, marketing or communications
  • For the Love of Winter - Art - No two snowflakes are alike, and this is a conference unlike any other. Winter is magic. Share your gift. Tell a story.

Presentation Formats

All presentations for this e-Global congress will be held online. Presentation formats include:

  • Lecture — A 90-minute session with 3 lectures on related topics. You present your contribution in a maximum of 20 minutes. A moderator leads the discussion following the presentations.
  • Workshops — A 90-minute interactive session that you lead together with another expert on the topic submitted. Tell us about your topic and the approach you suggest for the workshop in your submission form.
  • Panel session — Together with other experts you join a panel around a common theme. Each panel member makes a short presentation. After, a moderator interviews the panel and engages the audience.
  • Pecha Kucha — 20 slides, 20 seconds per slide, this is the formula for a Pecha Kucha presentation.
  • Live Tour - A 10-30min live tour, on foot or bicycle, highlighting the good or the bad, the special or the new.
  • Interview - A conversation, on stage, between two people, where the interview and interviewee delve into an interesting topic.
  • Plenary - A long format (up to an hour long) mainstage deep dive into something on which you are a subject matter expert. Suitable for a highly innovative idea that requires significant introduction time or recap of a life’s work.
  • Piece, story or performance - Think sound art, a video, a reaction conveyed by physical movement or a poem. Share something that just doesn’t quite fit into any of the above.

Selection Criteria

Preference will be given to proposals that:

  • Deliver cutting-edge information about issues related to winter cycling policy, planning, engineering, design, maintenance, implementation, evaluation and encouragement.
  • Address winter cycling through the lens of equity – this could mean discussing distribution of infrastructure, providing equal maintenance, encouraging marginalized groups to use bicycles and walk and other topics related to equity in the context of winter.
  • Emphasize innovative approaches and replicable examples.
  • Offer creativity, interest, excitement and urgency.
  • Engage new communities of people in discussions about cycling and sustainable transport.
